Chances go begging for both Towns

-

HEBBURN TOWN GUISBOROUGH TOWN 0 0

HEBBURN Town and Guisborough Town shared the spoils at the Energy Check Sports Ground – although the visitors will feel they did enough to earn all three points.

Both sides had chances in the opening half-hour as Lewis Wood went close for the Priorymen, with Graeme Armstrong and Robbie Spence having good opportunities for the hosts.

But the second-half was mainly about Guisborough and they really should have taken the lead with a golden chance for former Shildon striker Danny Earl. He raced on to a pass and forced Hornets keeper Andy Jennison into a smart save, but the rebound fell back to Earl and he looked set to put his side in front, only to see Matty Tumilty clear his effort from the goalline.

Joe Ferguson sent a cross-shot against the crossbar and Anthony Hume fired wide as the Priorymen sensed that the win was there for the taking.

There was to be one final chance for them to secure the points and again Tumilty left them frustrated.

A Ferguson shot was palmed by Jennison and Earl was on hand for the rebound, but Hornets defender Tumilty cleared from the line and ensured that his side claimed a hard-earned point.

SUNDERLAND RCA RYHOPE CW

4 3

LOCAL rivals Sunderland RCA and Ryhope CW produced a seven-goal thriller to warm up supporters on a freezing day on Wearside.

RCA raced into the lead in the first minute as the sides produced a blistering start to the game.

Nathan O’neill put the hosts ahead as he rose to meet a corner from the left-hand side, although the lead lasted just six minutes as Jack Devlin grabbed an equaliser.

RCA reacted well and went back in front less than 60 seconds later, Kyle Davis on the scoresheet.

Colin Larkin wasted the chance to extend RCA’S lead as his penalty was saved by Ryhope keeper Joe Atkinson; that miss was punished on 34 minutes as Devlin restored parity with his second goal.

But again, RCA reacted well and a sublime free-kick from Davis gave them the lead at half-time.

Ryhope though found another equaliser just seven minutes after the restart, Michael Rae racing on to a Ben Riding pass and slotting the ball into the net.

There was to be a decisive goal just before the hour-mark as O’neill met a cross from the right to secure his second goal of the day, and hand his side all three points after a thrilling derby win.
