Professional display moves Moors into Trophy draw

SPENNYMOOR 4 BARWELL 0

-

A professional display helped Spennymoor Town progress into round two of the FA Trophy with a home win against Barwell, writes MARK CARRUTHERS.

The Moors started well as they looked to put Tuesday night’s home defeat against Stockport County behind them.

Mark Anderson released Ryan Hall in on goal but his shot was saved by Canaries keeper Liam Castle and Glen Taylor fired the rebound well over the bar.

Anderson and Ramshaw both had shots blocked as the midway point of the first half approached, the Moors becoming frustrated in their efforts to break the deadlock. But that all changed on 26 minutes when Taylor headed them into a deserved lead.

The former Ashington striker was in the right place at the right time to send Hall cross beyond Castle and into the net for his 16th gal of the campaign.

Jason Ainsley’s side kept their lead until the half-time break, but they were grateful for a brave stop by Matthew Gould as he blocked an effort from Barwell winger Jahvan Davidson-miller.

There was another warning for the Moors early in the second half as Brad-lee Gascoigne sent a header across goal and against the outside of Gould’s post. But that was as good as it got for the Leicestershire outfit as their hosts took control of proceedings at an increasingly cold Brewery Field.

Taylor doubled his tally and his side’s lead on 51 minutes with a typically clinical finish after neat approach play from Jake Hibbs and Rob Ramshaw.

The lead was extended 20 minutes into the second half as Mark Anderson got the goal that his industrious performance had deserved.

Ryan Hall found some space in the visitors’ area and his shot somehow found its way under Canaries keeper Castle. Anderson was on hand to apply a simple finish into an empty net from close range.

And the midfielder grabbed his second and the Moors’ fourth of the day with 76 minutes on the clock with a wonderful goal.

A poor clearance from Castle found Anderson 25 yards from goal and he made no mistake by send the ball past the Barwell number one and into the net to round off a fine display from the hosts.
