Nelson touch Is not enough

-

TWO goals by new signing Andrew Nelson weren’t enough to stop Quakers losing at Victory Park.

Nelson, signed on loan from Sunderland 48 hours earlier, showed his pedigree with two good finishes, but Quakers let a half-time lead slip away in the second half.

The 22-year-old nearly opened his account on 13 minutes when he chested down a left-wing cross by Jordan Nicholson and ran into the box, but keeper CHORLEY 3 DARLINGTON 2 Matt Urwin saved at his feet.

Quakers, with another new signing, Alex Wollerton, also on debut, played well against the wind and took the lead on 39 minutes when Harvey Saunders beat two men and slipped the ball through for Nelson to run on and chip the ball over Urwin.

Chorley only created a couple of chances, the best a 50-yard wind-assisted free-

kick by Adam Blakeman that flew a couple of yards wide.

But just like Quakers, Chorley played better against the strong wind and equalised on 54 minutes.

A left-wing corner wasn’t cleared inside the six-yard box and the lurking Marcus Carver headed the ball in.

Quakers nearly went back in front as Jordan Nicholson fired just wide, then Nelson forced a full-length save out of sub keeper Danny Eccles.

But Chorley went in front on 66 minutes when Andy Teague found space in the area to collect a pass from the left, and beat Maddison with a low shot – although Quakers claimed there was a handball in the build up.

Within a minute, Maddison couldn’t hold a shot from Carver and Alex Newby tapped in for 3-1.

Nelson though didn’t give up, and he scored his second on 85 minutes. He controlled a crossfield pass by Ben O’hanlon, ran into the box, and cleverly lifted the ball over the keeper.

DARLINGTON: Maddison, Trotman, Kokolo (sub O’hanlon 58) , Wheatley, Burn, Galbraith, Wollerton, Nicholson, Saunders (sub Glover 76) Nelson, Thompson
