Boro big­wig doc­u­ments at auction

AN archive of doc­u­ments re­lat­ing to one of Mid­dles­brough’s found­ing fa­thers is go­ing up for auction.

The archive, con­signed by a pri­vate ven­dor, con­sists of doc­u­ments, le­gal in­stru­ments, maps and more re­lat­ing to the Bol­ckow fam­ily of Mid­dles­brough, and their es­tates at Mar­ton and Scaw­ton.

It is due to be sold at the Ten­nants Auc­tion­eers’ Coun­try House Sale on Satur­day, Jan­uary 12, in the firm’s Ley­burn sale­rooms.

Henry Bol­ckow (18061878) was born in Ger­many but moved to re­gion at 21 to work in the corn trade.

Af­ter be­com­ing a naturalised English­man in the 1840s, he co-founded the Bol­ckow Vaughan Iron­works and, af­ter sev­eral shrewd busi­ness moves, ex­panded into min­ing and quar­ry­ing.
