Boro bigwig documents at auction
AN archive of documents relating to one of Middlesbrough’s founding fathers is going up for auction.
The archive, consigned by a private vendor, consists of documents, legal instruments, maps and more relating to the Bolckow family of Middlesbrough, and their estates at Marton and Scawton.
It is due to be sold at the Tennants Auctioneers’ Country House Sale on Saturday, January 12, in the firm’s Leyburn salerooms.
Henry Bolckow (18061878) was born in Germany but moved to region at 21 to work in the corn trade.
After becoming a naturalised Englishman in the 1840s, he co-founded the Bolckow Vaughan Ironworks and, after several shrewd business moves, expanded into mining and quarrying.
The archive is being sold in six lots. See at www. tennants.co.uk
