Pair go to hospital after RNLI rescue
TWO men have been taken to hospital after a major search and rescue operation off the North East coast.
Humber Coastguard, the RNLI and Cleveland Police, the North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance were involved in the large operation at South Gare breakwater, north of Redcar, in Teesside yesterday morning.
It has now emerged that two people had entered the freezing waters.
The coastguard said the operation was a search and recovery for man in the water who had been swept off by the tide.
It is not yet known how he came to be in the water.
A second man also entered the water off the pier but managed to make his own way out back on to land.
A spokesman said Redcar and Staithes coastguard were both involved, along with Redcar lifeboat and the coastguard rescue helicopter after a call at 8.10am.
The RNLI said the Redcar lifeboat was launched at 8.12am after a call at 8.10am.
RNLI Redcar spokesman Dave Cocks said they responded with two boats to a call of a man in the water off South Gare.
He said the man was quickly located by the larger lifeboat and brought on the to vessel. Emergency medical treatment was then carried out on board as the man was returned to shore.
He was then handed over to ambulance crews for treatment to continue.
Mr Cocks said onshore lifeboat crew members also then found a second man on the breakwater.
He added: “He [the second man] was extremely cold and and had suffered a number of injuries from falling in the water and from getting back out again.”
The North East Ambulance Service said it was called at 8.22am to reports of two patients who had been in the water.
Two paramedic ambulances, a rapid response unit, the air ambulance and two hazardous area response teams attended.
A NEAS spokesman said: “Two patients were taken tojames Cook University Hospital.”
Humber Coastguard said the incident had concluded by 10.20am.
Cleveland Police was unable to release any details about the incident, saying its investigations were still ongoing.
