Steel­ers res­cue a point in close-fought bat­tle

THE Steel­men of Con­sett showed plenty of met­tle as they res­cued a draw from their visit to Whick­ham.

The dogged and de­ter­mined Lang Jacks looked set to in­flict only a third league de­feat of the sea­son on their vis­i­tors as they took a slim lead into sec­ond-half in­jury-time.

But cap­tain Dan Craggs picked the per­fect time to step up and curl a free-kick past Whick­ham keeper Dan Lis­ter to en­sure that the spoils were shared.

The Lang Jacks got off to the per­fect start and were ahead in­side the open­ing two min­utes.

Scott Martin­dale got on the end of a long free-kick and sent the ball back across goal to al­low Damien Stevens a chance that he couldn’t miss at the far-post.

The for­mer Ashington striker was a con­stant thorn in the side of the Con­sett back-four and al­most dou­bled his tally on four min­utes.

Kyle Oliver was given too much time to send a dan­ger­ous cross into the six-yard box but Stevens nar­rowly failed to make con­tact with the goal at his mercy.

Con­sett equalised with their first real chance of the game as for­mer South Shields winger Ak­sel Juul pro­duced a won­der strike from all of 25 yards that left Whick­ham keeper Dan Lis­ter with no chance.

The Lang Jacks edged back in front as the half­way point of the first-half ap­proached.
