Confident Quakers fail to break through
ALFRETON DARLINGTON 0 0
DARLINGTON picked up a good point at the Impact Arena – but they could so easily have come home with all three.
The game was fairly even in the first half, but after the break, it was almost one-way traffic towards the Alfreton goal, but Quakers couldn’t break through.
On the other hand, it was their second successive clean sheet, and that was down to an excellent performance by their trio of centre halves of Terry Galbraith, Simon Ainge and Will Smith.
There weren’t many chances in the first half.
Former Darlington striker Reece Styche had a good chance for Alfreton after 10 minutes but he sidefooted straight at Darlington keeper Jonny Maddison, while at the other end Simon Ainge headed a Terry Galbraith free kick into the side netting.
Maddison also punched away a free kick by Jordan Sinnott towards half time, but he wasn’t troubled in the second half as Quakers took command.
Quakers nearly took the lead on 51 minutes when Jordan Nicholson split the defence for Stephen Thompson to burst through, but he pulled his shot across the face of goal.
Five minutes later, Alfreton keeper Sam Ramsbottom pulled off a good diving save from Joe Wheatley’s 25 yarder after he was set up by Williams Kokolo.
Thompson was unlucky again on 70 minutes with a fierce shot that Ramsbottom could only parry, and Harvey Saunders just failed to reach the rebound.
Nicholson then made a great run from well inside his own half and split the defence for Saunders, who had a shot charged down by Ramsbottom.
Thompson then showed a moment of brilliance when he instantly controlled a long ball and from the edge of the box hit another effort that Ramsbottom blocked.
And in the last minute, with Alfreton rocking, Nicholson played a one-two with Luke Trotman and curled a left foot shot just wide of the post. Darlington: Maddison, Trotman, Kokolo (sub Henshall 75), Smith, Ainge, Galbraith, Elliott, Wheatley, Saunders, Thompson, Nicholson. Subs: O’hanlon, hall, Glover, Burn
