Town stay ahead from start
ALL of the hard work was completed by halftime for Morpeth Town as they maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Evo-stik NPL East table with a 3-0 win at Gresley.
Ever-lively winger Sean Taylor almost put the Highwaymen in front with less than two minutes on the clock when he brought an instinctive save out of hosts’ keeper Oliver Fairbrother.
But there was nothing the stopper could do to prevent Morpeth taking the lead on 20 minutes when a foul on Liam Henderson saw Nicky Gray’s side awarded a penalty.
David Carson stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick with minimal fuss.
Michael Turner doubled the advantage just before the half-hour mark when he rose to meet a Ben Sayer cross and headed his second goal of the season past Fairbrother.
And Morpeth took a three-goal lead into half-time after Liam Henderson headed home from close-range after a Taylor cross caused issues for the host’s defence. GRESLEY MORPETH
The pressure continued into the secondhalf and Carson and Henderson both came close to adding to their haul for the day by the time the hour-mark had passed.
Substitute Jack Foalle brought a fine save out of Fairbrother in stoppage time as the Gresley stopper kept out a powerful effort with his leg.
Morpeth now head into next weekend’s home game against Loughborough Dynamo with revenge on their minds after falling to a 2-1 defeat in the East Midlands in midnovember.
