MP calls for rethink over fire service cuts

Opponents hit back at plans to axe £ 5m from our frontline services

“It’s only the past week we have been told that prisons are full and those arrested will have to be lodged in police stations.

“Essential services have to be fully maintained in order to work properly.”

But Legionaire suggested the fire service must also bear some of the blame for any shortfall in funding: “I am bemused by the fact that since the forties there seems to have been a never- ending programme of building new fire station buildings and vacating existing buildings in Sunderland.

“If the fire service was a commercial business, the shareholde­rs might have found it necessary to ‘ fire’ the senior management before now.”
