Radio presenters hope to tune in to winning ways
BRIGHT sparks are making waves in the radio industry.
Three volunteers from Spark FM, based at Sunderland University’s St Peter’s Campus, have been nominated in the prestigious Student Radio Awards.
Jonny Chambers, Alex Burgess and Dom Stirling will attend a ceremony at London’s O2 Arena next month in the hope of scooping a host of gongs at the awards, which helped launch the career of Radio 1 star Greg James
Jonny, 19, from Moorside, is in line for the Best Male Presenter in UK Student Radio; Alex, 20, from South Shields, for the Best Female Presenter in UK Student Radio and Dom, from Blackpool, for Best Newcomer in UK Student Radio.
The station also has a nomination in the Best Speech category for one of its groundbreaking documentaries: Doomsday Love Affair: The Culture, produced by Students Caitlin Sneddon and Robert Cudmore.
Since launching four years ago, the community station has racked up numerous accolades both in the UK and abroad at the New York Radio Festival, in which the station was named Best in the World.
The station has more than 100 volunteers, made up of students and young people from across Sunderland and is operated from the David Puttnam Media Centre.
