PARENTS across Wearside are getting stuck into homework after going back to school.

In a joint project, Sunderland College has teamed up with primary schools across the city to deliver the Adult and Child Education, ACE, programme, which gives parents the opportunity to gain qualifications in maths and English to improve their teaching approach at home.

A number of schools, including Valley Road Community Primary School in Hendon and Academy 360 in Pennywell, are giving both parents and children the chance to learn how to work together and independently in weekly sessions.

Lisa Wyness, head of Engagement and Community Learning at Sunderland College, said: “Recent studies showed that children with involved parents often flourish at school, which is why the programme aims to help parents create an environment that encourages learning in the most up to date method.”

Sarah Reynolds, 36, from Hendon, whose children Gaby, 10, Izzy, eight and six- year- old William, attend Valley Road, gained a Level 1 English qualification and is sitting her Level 2 maths at the school.

She said: “The curriculum has changed so much since I was at school, so having the opportunity to improve my skills, while helping my children has been great.

Homework is much more enjoyable now that I can relate and I’m seeing a big improvement in my children’s confidence.”
