Poyet: Match passion from the stands

-

H“We need to attack more, defend better.

“There are so many things that we need to do better.”

As a minimum requirement, Poyet says his players need to match the passion on the terraces, regardless of the quality of his side’s display

But he believes his team talk should be one of the most straightforward of the season, with Sunderland desperate for both the bragging rights and the points.

“It should be a very easy pre- match meeting,” added the Uruguayan. “When they say the manager needs to motivate the players, well in these games, you don’t need to do a lot.

“We need to make sure we know the strengths and weaknesses of Newcastle and prepare better for any adversity and react better to any goal conceded.

“But if there’s one thing you need in this situation, it’s desire. That’s a minimum.

“Obviously, you cannot be passionate and then don’t do the other side of the game, technically and tactically. Otherwise you can’t play in the Premier League. “But we need that desire. “For a few players, it’s natural.

“We’re not going to ask everybody to be like Lee ( Cattermole) but we know what is needed in these types of games in terms of presence.”

Sunderland have managed just win in 11 Premier League games at home to Newcastle, when Kieran Richardson hit the winner in October, 2008. Newcastle have managed five draws and five wins.
