A YEAR after his tragic death, the family of Kevin Paterson is no closer to finding out what caused his death minutes after completing the Great Birmingham Run.

The 36- year- old, from Seaham, collapsed after crossing the finishing line on October 21 last year.

Kathryn Cowen, 39, said not knowing why her brother died so suddenly is hard.

“It is still difficult not to know,” she said. “The coroner has been waiting for the results and things, and now they have them, but I think we will be looking at early next year at this rate.”

On Sunday, Kathryn and 25 friends and family took part in the Great Birmingham Run to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young in Kevin’s memory.

Sister Laura Bartley, 32, mum Pat Toft, 71, both of Seaham, sister Maddy Paterson, 23, Kathryn’s husband Pete, 52, and Kevin’s wife Katy, 31, turned out to support the runners.

Kathryn said: “I found it to be this really amazing experience.

“It’s kind of nice to know when he did it last year that that is what he experienced.”

So far, more than £ 16,000 has been raised in Kevin’s memory.

The coroner at Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court, Sarah Ormond- Walsh, said: “There is only one coroner here, and we do have a long list of cases. There is nothing unusual about the time the case is taking to be heard.”
