Boyfriend’s rescue bid ends in court

A MAN trying to break up a fight between a group of women in a bar landed himself in court after he became aggressive towards police.

Luke Greener was celebrating his 25th birthday when his girlfriend became involved in an altercation on the dance floor of Lola’s Bar in Vine Place, Sunderland magistrates heard.

But as he went to her aid, bouncers decided to kick him out.

Police were called after a doorman said he had been assaulted by Greener, of Spa Well Drive, Wear View.

“Because of the complaint, police advised Mr Greener that he was being arrested on suspicion of assault,” prosecutor Paul Anderson said.

“He doesn’t take kindly to that. He tenses his arms and does not co- operate with police. He becomes aggressive.

“He is eventually taken to the ground and is detained and taken to the police station.”

Greener was also found in possession of cocaine, the court heard.

Mr Anderson added the doorman later said he did not wish to make a complaint because he was not injured.

Greener, a plasterer, admitted resisting a police officer and possession of cocaine.

Sandra Fife, mitigating, said: “His girlfriend likes to dance. The next he knows, there are four girls on top of his girlfriend on the dance floor.

“He picked her up and put her behind the bar. She found that she had lost her handbag, he went to retrieve it.

“He was put on the floor and almost choked out of breath.

“All he was trying to do was protect his girlfriend. He didn’t assault anyone in that club.

“He maintains that he’s done absolutely nothing wrong inside that club. He now understands that he should just have gone with the officers.”

Greener was fined £ 315 and told to pay a £ 20 victim surcharge and £ 85 costs.
