Caring puts Jodie in prize position
Hard- working students picked up prizes at East Durham College’s first awards night of the year.
HARD- WORKING students picked up prizes at East Durham College’s first awards night of the year.
A ceremony was held in the Peterlee- based college’s Scene 1 Restaurant to present 11 Student of the Month awards.
The college said there were some exceptional winners and none more so than Jodie Morgan who was given the animal care award.
Jodie, 18, from Houghton, joined in 2011 and has excelled on the course, picking up distinction grades in a number of modules.
During her time at its Houghall Campus in Durham, tutors say Jodie has shown commitment and completed work placements, even travelling to Wales for three weeks to work at a zoo in Snowdonia.
Her dedication has gained her a part- time job at Penshaw Aquatics, and next summer she hopes to go on to study zoology at the University of Leeds.
Animal care lecturer John Reid, said: “Jodie has been a fantastic student and really deserves this award.
“She is a highly dedicated student who clearly loves the course and is determined to make a career in animal care, and with that dedication I’m sure she’ll go far.”
Jodie said: “It was a real shock to be put forward for the award, but I am really proud to have been chosen.
“I have worked really hard on the course since I joined Houghall, but I love what I do so I enjoy learning.”
The business award went to Kimberley Tate, business and IT to Tracy Bright, care to Phyllis Barrow, catering and hospitality to Jordan McQuillan and childcare to Aimee Jackson.
Construction awards went to Thomas McGoldrick and Dominic Gibson, ED6 to Sarah Maher, horticul- ture to Jack Richardson and worked based learning to Kathleen Urwin.
Principal Suzanne Duncan said: “These awards are one of my favourite events in the academic calendar. They are a very important celebration of excellence, achievement and endeavour by students from across the college.”
