We must stand United – Tiote

STAND- IN captain Cheik Tiote’s pleaded for unity after Newcastle United’s WearTyne derby defeat.

The result increased pressure on boss Alan Pardew – the first Newcastle manager to preside over back- to- back derby losses since Joe Harvey in 1967 – ahead of games against Manchester City and Chelsea this week.

Tiote ( pictured right) – who skippered the team in the absence of the injured Fabricio Coloccini – says the players must quickly draw a line under the loss, which provoked an angry reaction from supporters.

“I’m really disappointed, because we didn’t win,” Tiote said.

“That’s football. We have to stay as a team, stay compact and try to win the next game.

“I think it’s going to be a tough week for us – it’s two massive games against Man City and Chelsea.

“But I think if we stay together and do the right things, we have a chance.”

On his captaincy, the 27- year- old added: “As a captain, you need to show an example, so I tried to do that in the right way.”

Newcastle were furious at referee Lee Probert’s role in Borini’s goal. Probert’s assistant flagged for a throw- in, but the Wiltshire official awarded a foul against Tiote.

Sunderland took a quick free- kick, broke upfield and scored.

Tiote felt Newcastle deserved at least a point from the game.

“I think we deserved more than that, but they scored the winning goal,” said the midfielder.

Newcastle face Manchester City at St James’s Park on Wednesday night in the Capital One Cup, and entertain Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League.
