A CORONER will show CCTV footage of the final moments of a father- of- two who was found dead at a Washington recycling plant.

An inquest has been opened into the death of John Sumner, from Sunderland, whose body was discovered by workers separating rubbish at Impetus Washington Recycling Centre, on Wilden Road, at about 1pm on Tuesday, June 24.

A CORONER hopes CCTV footage will unravel the mystery of a father- of- two’s death after he was found dead at a Washington recycling plant.

An inquest was opened into the death of John Sumner, from Sunderland, whose body was discovered by workers separating rubbish at Impetus Washington Recycling Centre, on Wilden Road, on Tuesday, June 24.

Police attended the scene, along with the ambulance service, where the body was found and death confirmed.

Detectives were initially treating Mr Sumner’s death as suspicious, but later ruled out any third party involvement.

The final cause of the 26- yearold’s death has yet to be established.

Senior Coroner Derek Winter told a hearing in Sunderland Coroner’s Court that CCTV footage would be played at his full inquest, which will show how he got to be in a bin.

The inquest is also expected to hear from Home Office pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton, who carried out a post- mortem examination on Mr Sumner, which has proved inconclusive.

He said: “I am satisfied that as part of an investigation into Mr Sumner’s death, an inquest will be required, given the circumstances of his death.

“I will be calling evidence from Dr Bolton and a police overview.”

Police carried out door- todoor inquiries in the days after Mr Sumner’s body was found, cordoning off a street in Pallion where it was believed he had lived.

His address was given by the coroner’s officer as Maydown Close, Fulford Grange, in Sunderland.

Mr Sumner’s funeral is to take place on Monday at St Joseph’s Church in Millfield.
