PLACES are now up for grabs for a men- only charity race coming to Sunderland for the first time.

Miles for Men’s 5km fun- run, which raises funds for cancer charities, has become a popular fixture in Hartlepool in recent years.

Now it is making its Sunderland debut at Herrington Country Park on Sunday, August 3.

The first Miles for Men fun run took place along the Hartlepool seafront in August 2012, with more than 1,000 runners raising £ 40,000. The events have now raised more than £ 85,000.

The idea came from founder Michael Day Jnr, who lost his father to cancer.

“When I started planning the first run, I had no idea that within a couple of years we would have runs not just in the North East but now across the country,” he said. “It’s great to think that this summer, we will have thousands of men pounding the streets to raise funds for cancer charities.”

Offshore recruitment specialist Seatechs has been announced as corporate sponsor for the 2014 series of Miles for Men charity runs across the region.

Managing director Paul Cave said: “As a business which predominantly deals with men, we are extremely proud to be announced as corporate sponsor for the 2014 series of runs.

“Everyone is affected by cancer at some stage in their lives, whether that is a family member, relative, a friend or even ourselves.

“Miles for Men is an amazing charity which has set the standard high in terms of raising awareness of cancers that impact on men.
