Throwing light on a special service
A HOUGHTON mum’s memorial event will light up the coastline to raise awareness of stillbirths.
Kirsty McGurrell who launched 4Louis, a bereavement charity, after her son was stillborn in 2009, has organised a special Wave of Light service at Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn, on Wednesday.
The event will be held as part of International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, which runs from today and is marked across the globe’s different time zones.
Kirsty said: “The idea is that, at 7pm, the candles will be lit in each of the different countries, so there will be a continuous wave of light
“Ours will be extra special because Souter Lighthouse will be turning on its beam, so it will look amazing.”
Parents, who can bring along their families and friends, are asked to make their way to the landmark’s Foghorn Field at 6.30pm, where they will be given a candle to light or, if preferred, they can bring their own.
The North East and Scots Pipe Band, plus Custom Voices Gospel Choir, will also be there to provide music.
Kirsty said: “This will be the third year we’ve held the Wave of Light at Souter.
“Last year I’d say about 150 people turned up and all of the candles looked beautiful in the dark.
“We just want as many people as possible to know what we’re doing so they’ll hopefully come along.”
