Flames move top in stunning style

-

SUNDERLAND Flames continued their flying start to the season with a 56- 0 demolition of Mellish Ladies.

The Flames also cruised to the top of the National Challenge North East League for the first time after the impressive victory.

The first of the 10 tries came straight from the kick- off. A crash ball up the middle of the field made its way out to the far right corner, where full- back Helen Jones crossed to open the scoring.

Becky Robson soon followed in the opposite corner, scoring the first of her four tries. Robson not only beat her opposition for pace, she also showed great strength to break through three tackles.

So convincing was her dominance on the left, she soon notched up her hat- trick before halftime.

Karen Donkin also gained her first try for the Flames after some expansive running set up by the rest of the line.

Soon after the break, Danielle Andrew demonstrated some impressive footwork to weave through the Mellish line and score beneath the posts. Andrew soon added a second.

Amber Stonehouse came close to claiming some of the try- scoring glory for the forwards, but, at the last minute, selflessly passed to Kirsty Paterson, who crashed over the line.

Saskia Ryan- Munden broke free on the right wing and crossed for a try.

Rounding off proceedings was Robson, who crossed over for her fourth try of the game and complete the scoring.

Flames now turn their attentions to their next match which is against fellow undefeated side Doncaster next weekend.
