Job’s an Honour at Pools

POOLS legend Brian Honour believes the vacant manger’s job is still an attractive one – despite the team’s struggles.

Honour, who scored 36 goals in 384 first team matches for the club between 1985 and 1994 admitted he “wasn’t surprised” that former manager Cooper handed in his notice after the 3- 0 home defeat to Carlisle United.

Honour likens the current situation to when Cyril Knowles took over as manager in December, 1989, and helped steer struggling Pools towards safety that season.

He said: “I have been in this situation at Pools before and back then we had Cyril Knowles who came in and transformed the whole club.

“We were heading for the trap door and struggling until he came in.

“I’m not so sure if there is another Cyril Knowles type out there, and whoever does come in is restricted on the types of player they can bring in.

“Back then we trained seven days a week, 9am to 5pm and he never gave anybody a day off until he saw we were getting points on the board.

“It was a hard slog but that was what was needed, players are different now though and circumstances change.

“It is still an attractive job, though. It is a great club and I go back to what we were like under Cyril.

“It was a ramshackle ground then and we didn’t have any facilities or training ground.

“Look at what they have now, superb facilities. They have a fantastic ground and training ground and do everything right.

“Whoever takes over, can only go up, it is an opportunity for somebody.”
