Sunderland’s newest hotel is celebrating drawing a sellout crowd for its opening football weekend.

The Hilton Garden Inn, Sunderland, which launched earlier this month, was full to capacity as the Black Cats took on Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, just a few metres away.

Home and away supporters made the most of the new facilities before and after the 90 minutes, with all hospitality packages sold out days in advance.

Sunderland AFC supporters who had not pre-booked were able to enjoy a postgame celebration and filled the hotel’s Karbon Grill bar to toast their side’s 3-2 victory, while many Blues followers also stayed overnight to postpone the long journey home.

Bolstered by the victory, the team at the Hilton Garden Inn are now preparing for the final home game of the season, when Sunderland AFC take on Everton on Wednesday.

“The feedback we have received since the Hilton Garden Inn opened earlier this month has been outstanding,” said Kim Kelso, general manager at Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland.

“While we were expecting to be busy to coincide with the football, it was even better than anticipated for Sunderland v Chelsea and it was great to see the bar and restaurant full both before and after the game.

“We are now looking forward to welcoming a similar crowd for the Everton game, as well as for all home games in the forthcoming seasons.”

The Hilton Garden Inn, Sunderland, which is the first of its brand in Northern England, boasts 141-bedrooms, as well as a 24-hour business centre, fitness suite and the Pan-American inspired Karbon Grill Kitchen and Bar.

The Karbon bar will be open for pre and post-match drinks for Sunderland’s final home game of the season, against Everton at 7.45pm on Wednesday. Pre-match tables are available now, but very limited, with prompt booking advised.
