At Tunstall WI’s annual meeting, Jennifer Vincent was re-elected as president to begin her 19th year. All members and five visitors enjoyed the egg jarping with much laughter and was won by Jennie Temple. A report was given on the council meeting, which was held at Wrekenton for the first time with good attendance. The next meeting will be onThursday at 7pm in North Street Methodist Church, Silksworth. There will be a fashion show by Bon Marche with items to purchase (cash only). Members will be reminded of the group meeting on Thursday, May 19, from 7pm-9.30pm also to be held at North Street Methodist Church when Tunstall WI will be the hostess institute. It will be a Country and West- ern theme with members dressing accordingl­y (optional). This event is ticket only and all tickets have been sold. The two resolution­s for the AGM at Brighton on June 11 will be discussed. The competitio­n is an informativ­e tea towel. Visitors are welcome. The Herrington village show gardeners are having a plant sale on Saturday from 10am at the Strawberry Rose coffee shop,East Herrington. On sale will be a variety of tomato plants including Tumbling Tom’, ideal for hanging baskets, and the yellow tomato, Golden Sunrise. There will be some giant onion plants and other vegetable plants garden ready. Spray chrysanthe­mum and dahlia plants can be purchased or ordered for later delivery. Two varieties of sunflowers and a special hardy perennial Echinops Ruthenicus, a striking architectu­ral feature plant. Funds raised will go to the village show scheduled for September.

The herd has returned to its summer grazing in West Park. The cattle have been a sight in Herrington for generation­s. Dog walkers who use the grazing section in winter are advised to use other parts of the park while the young bullocks are in residency. The wild rabbits on Herrington Hill have descended and colonised West Herrington cemetery and the fields running along the B1286. They appear in their vast numbers to coexist with the horses.
