ACCUSED IS HELD OVER MURDER
A man was today remanded in custody charged with murder of a former special constable from Sunderland
Daniel Johnson, 20, is charged with murdering David Wilson, who was found dead at his flat in Southwick Road, Sunderland, on December 14, 2014.
Johnson, whose address was given as Howe Street, Gateshead, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court this morning wearing a grey sweat top.
He made no plea to the charge.
Magistrates remanded Johnson in custody and he is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court tomorrow.
Mr Wilson, aged 49, had been stabbed to death.
District Judge Roger Elsy told him: “I can’t grant bail. You will be remanded until Friday, July 22, and this case will be sent to the Crown Court.”
Mr Wilson grew up in H etton and attended the town’s comprehensive school.
A popular member of the community, he was a keen cricketer who went on to have spells playing for Eppleton and East Rainton cricket clubs’ first teams.
As well as working as assistant manager of the Milburngate shopping centre in Durham City, he was also a special constable with Northumbria Police, and had spells working as a postman and a ticket inspector on the railways.
