Yedlin joins Mags as Janmaat heads out

-

DeAndre Yedlin’s arrival at Newcastle United has spelled the end for Daryl Janmaat.

The former Sunderland loan right-back is on the brink of a £5million move from Tottenham, having arrived on Tyneside yesterday.

Yedlin – who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light – watched the Magpies’ 2-0 EFL Cup win over Cheltenham Town last night.

The 23-year-old will undergo a medical today before completing the formalities of the move.

Janmaat, left out at Bristol City in the Championship last weekend, was not involved against Cheltenham.

Watford have had a £7.5million bid for Janmaat accepted, but West Ham are also bidding to sign the 27-year-old.

Janmaat, understood to have said his goodbyes ahead of the cup tie, is interested in a move to the London Stadium, and the Hammers could yet match Watford’s offer.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez refused to talk about the futures of Yedlin and Janmaat after the Cheltenham game. “We don’t talk about these things,” said Benitez, who had said ahead of the cup tie that it would take a “fantastic” offer to persuade the club to sell Janmaat.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Rob Elliot, recovering from a long-term knee injury, is understood to have agreed a new long-term contract.

The Magpies are likely to announce the deal next week.

Elliot – who anterior cruciate ligament playing for the Republic of Ireland in March – could be back in contention for a comeback in October.

Brighton, who visit Newcastle on Saturday, won 4-2 at Oxford in the EFL Cup.

Sam Adekugbe, Kazenga LuaLua, Elvis Manu and Tomer Hemed all struck and boss Chris Hughton hailed his young side, saying: “To bounce back from 1-1, when the momentum might have gone their way, was really good.”
