A historic city school went out on a high after recording its best-ever set of GCSE results.

Staff and students were left reeling earlier this year when it was announced Sunderland High School would be closing this summer after more than 130 years of education in the city.

But nothing was going to stop them from ending on a high with a fantastic set of GCSE results.

Among those celebrating was Alex Catcheside, 16, from Millfield, who clinched an amazing 10 A*s. He is now planning to study for A-levels at St Robert of Newminster RC School and Sixth Form.

He said: “I knew I had done well, but I never expected this.”

Other high-flyers included Ruth Chapman, 16, who gottwoA*s,sevenAsanda B and is going on to study Aleves at St Anthony’s Catholic Girls’ Academy, Alicia Cordery, 16, who got three A*s and seven As and is going on to Durham Johnston sixth form, and Ingrid Mushens, who got two A*s, seven As and one B and is going to study A-levels at Durham School.

Overall, 87% of the pupils achieved five or more GCSE’s including the all-important English and maths, 44% of the passes were A*-A grades, 71% were A*-B and an impressive 93% were A*-C.

Head of Sunderland High School, Dr Angela Slater, said: “This has been an unprecedented year for the Year 11 students and for the staff who have supported them.

“They have always been a hard-working group, but they have had to remain extra focused and positive in the context of the school closure.”

Dr Slater said it was a day of mixed emotions, with the school closing its doors for the final time, but she added: “We are definitely going out with a bang.”

Head of Sixth Form and teacher, Jackie Robson, said: “They leave this school with a great set of results and with the core values of the school – the hallmark of all the previous generations, 132 years’ worth, of young people who have passed through the doors of Sunderland High School.”
