Wearsiders are being urged to take a hike – and take part in a popular annual event.

Entries are now open for the BIG Walk, part of the Active Sunderland programme of events, which is on Sunday, September 25.

It starts at 10am in Herrington Country Park and there are three different circular routes to choose from, all starting and finishing in the park and allowing walkers views of some of the city’s major landmarks.

Wearside Role Model of the Year and local celebrity Katie Bulmer-Cooke is giving a pre-walk warm-up for all the strollers.

Katie said: “The Active Sunderland programme of participation events has its emphasis very much on having a fun and healthy experience. Walking is a great way for families to have an enjoyable time and at the same time get fitter together.

“I’d encourage everyone to come along and take part in what is a fantastic event.”

Hundreds of people of all ages are again expected to take part in the walk, which was first held in 2012.

Coun John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s port- folio holder for public health, wellness and culture, added: “It is great to have an event such as this which gives everyone the opportunity to explore some of our best known landmarks and enjoy some fantastic scenery.”

Entries are now open online.

The three mile walk is £10, the seven-and-a-half mile is walk £11 and the 11.5 mile walk is £12. Entry fee includes a rucksack, medal, goody bag and access to free family fun activities within the park.

The closing date for entries is Monday, September 19.
