Animal Magic was the theme for the evening again at St Nicholas Wednesday Brownies, when the girls practised their sewing skills to create a Beanie Animal Friend. The Brownies also enjoyed playing Happy Animal Families and if you had been passing, no doubt you would have heard some strange noises coming from the hall, as they went in search of their family members.

Soup and Socks will be held at St Nicholas Church on Saturday at 12.30pm.

The Beltones will entertain members of Ewesley Road Ladies’ Fellowship when they meet tomorrow at 7.30pm. There will also be a sales table.

The Durham Hymns will take place on Saturday, March 18, at 7.30pm with performanc­es by Durham Miners’ Associatio­n Brass Band, The Centenary Choir and Voices of Hope at Sunderland Minster. Tickets are £12 (£8 concession­s). This major new work for brass band and choir was commission­ed by Northern Regional Brass Band Trust in partnershi­p with Durham County Council to mark the anniversar­y of the Battle of The Somme Lyrics, for a suite of new hymns, by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, inspired by the true life experience­s of county Durham people and commemorat­ing their sacrifice, courage and endurance.

His experience­s as a national serviceman 60 years ago will be recalled by President Jack Walton to fellow members of Bishopwear­mouth and Sunderland Men’s Probus Clubs at their next meeting in Ashbrooke Sports Pavilion at 10.30am on Tuesday, March 14. Admission is free. All are welcome.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group will meet on Thursday at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. An illustrate­d talk will be given by Vera Baty on Holidays, Houses and Gardens in England.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club will meet on Thursday, March 23 in St John’s Church, Ashbrooke. On this occasion Hollie Coxon will visit with a talk on The History of the Empire Theatre. Coffee will be served at 10am and the meeting begins at 10.30am.

Barnes Pallion and Millfield Residents’ Associatio­n will meet tonight at 7pm in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street.

Ewesley Road Methodist Church will be holding its annual jumble sale on Saturday, March 25, at 1pm. There are always plenty of bargains to be had, so get there early to snap them up. Entry is 30p. Tonight, at 7pm, the evening service at Seaham Spirituali­st Church, Vane Hall, Cornelia Terrace, will be conducted by Mrs V Atess. There is a cover charge of £3.50. Everyone is welcome.

If you are looking to improve your health, feel fitter or just get out and about and meet new people then go along and join in some gentle exercise for older adults. Services for March 12, the second Sunday of Lent will be as follows: St Andrew’s, Dalton-le-Dale, Holy Communion at 9.15am; Christ Church, New Seaham, Morning Prayer at 10am; Holy Communion at 6pm. Everyone welcome to join in the Fellowship. Many thanks to all who went along to the monthly lunch at Christ Church, at which £396 was raised. The next monthly lunch will be held on Friday, March 24. There will be a grand Easter raffle and prizes for the tombola stall are urgently required.

Christ Church annual meeting is to be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 7pm. Nomination­s for the posts of Church Wardens and PCC members are now required, as are the annual reports from the church organisati­ons.
