His subject will cover his early life in Boldon. Sue Balmer will speak at the April meeting about ‘Arbeia’ and instead of the May meeting the group will visit Delaval Hall for its annual summer outing.

Boldon Churches Together Lenten services will take place this week on Thursday at St George’s in East Boldon. The half hour service at noon will be followed by a light lunch of soup or sandwiches. A donation will be accepted towards the cost, which will be divided equally between CAFOD and Christian Aid. The service on March 16 will take place in East Boldon Methodist Church.

West Boldon Residents’ Associatio­n will meet tomorrow in The Wheatsheaf in West Boldon at 10am. Anyone interested in the village or Boldon area is invited to join members at any of their monthly meetings. The group’s next social event will take place on Wednesday, March 22, in The Wheatsheaf at 5pm, which will consist of a Dutch Auction at 5pm followed by a supper of Fish and chips at 6pm. Tickets are available by contacting any member.

Plans have been submitted for the demolition of Boldon C of E Primary School situated on West Boldon Bank, which was closed in 2009 despite a strong protest from parents. The Diocese of Durham owns the land the school sits on and the Diocese’s long term plan aims to sell the land for residentia­l housing. In recent years it has become a target for vandals, smashing windows and starting small fires in the building.

This Thursday local folk band Seganainm will host the Folk Club at The Cricket Club on Sunderland Road in East Boldon at 8pm. An early St Patrick’s night is planned at The Travelling Man in West Boldon on Thursday, March 16, which will feature folk band Seganainm and
