The Academy at Shotton Hall has been named as a National Citizen Service (NCS) Champion School. NCS is committed to community projects to benefit young people and society. On this Government-backed nationwide programme for 16 and 17-year-old, teenagers live independen­tly for two to four weeks, learn more about their communitie­s and how to make a difference through social action projects. Last year The Academy recruited more than 50 students to the NCS programme with 36 students on board for this year. NCS programme focuses around fun and discovery, building skills for work and life, taking on new challenges and adventures, making new friends, and contributi­ng to their community. The NCS summer experience includes a week of adventure at an outdoor centre in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales or Scottish borders to enjoy adventure, fun and freedom, with a week developing life skills like confidence, leadership. The team take part in their own community project – making a lasting impact on the local area.

A delighted Horden and Peterlee Rugby Club has been selected as one of only 60 clubs nationally to take part in the Natwest Rugby Force 2017 Programme in conjunctio­n with the RFU. This includes a consultati­on from the head groundsman at Twickenham and a £2,000 grant to help improve the pitch at Eden Lane. Work is to start this summer.

Thank you to volunteers who attended Horden’s Helping Hands Big Spring Clean, working in partnershi­p with Horden Parish Council and Durham County Council Civic Pride Team. Big thanks to Joan Zettle for the homemade cake and Cath Summer Smith for the homemade pies and Creative Youth Opportunit­ies, County Durham and Darlington Fire & Rescue Service, Councillor­s Derek Nicol, June Clark, Chris Cain and Isabelle Roberts for providing support.

A Durham County Council 10-mile walk to Crimdon and Castle Eden Denes will take place on Saturday at 10am (5hrs) with Steve Shippen, voluntary ranger. It starts at Crimdon Dene near Pony World TS27 4BL GR NZ 483 37.

Blood donor sessions will be held in Peterlee Methodist Church hall on Tuesday, March 14, from 2.05pm to 4pm and 4.50pm to 7.05pm. There are limited walk in slots and appointmen­ts can be made at https://www. blood.co.uk/ or call 0300 123 23 23.

Internatio­nal Women’s Day will be held at East Durham College tomorrow from 10.30am to noon. There will be free dance, music, drama, art and much more. Contact Lindsey on 5693511 at East Durham Trust for details.
