Doris joined the craft class, which was started at the home of Phyllis Nicholson 27 years ago and she still attends every Thursday at Redwood Grove Community Room as well as many founder members. Doris produces some wonderful work and is proof that keeping your mind active keeps you young. Doris was a member of Tunstall WI for many years also Silksworth Over-Sixties and Friendly Club and served on all committees. She is a valued member of the craft class and the members look forward to celebratin­g her 100th birthday with her next year.

Silksworth’s North Street Methodist Church Sisterhood will meet on Monday, April 3, at 2pm. Guest speaker will be Gillian Patten.

Ryhope Karate Club did really well at the NKA competitio­n. All the students won trophies. The club trains at Ryhope Community Centre every Wednesday and Thursday from 5.15 to 6.15pm. For more informatio­n, ring Mark 0750831873­8.

Ryhope Engines Museum will be holding an Easter Steaming Weekend, from April 14 to 17, from 11am to 4pm. Admission and car parking is free. The Ryhope Engines Museum is based on the Ryhope Pumping Station, which was built in 1868 to supply water to the Sunderland area. The station ceased operation in 1967 – after 100 years of continuous use. The museum is now regarded as one of the finest industrial monuments in the North East of England, and is in a Grade II (starred) listed building. Although the station no longer pumps water, the two 100 horsepower beam engines are kept in working order by volunteer members of the Ryhope Engines Trust, and ‘steamed’ periodical­ly for the benefit of visitors

Friends of Sunderland Museum (FOSUMS) will meet on Saturday, April 8, in Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Burdon Road, at 2pm. Speaker Chris Mullin will talk about Hinterland – A Memoir. The former MP for Sunderland South gives an account of his life as a journalist, author and politician, followed by book signing. Visitors are welcome, charge £2.

Donnison School will be holding an Easter event on Saturday, April 15, from 11am to 2pm. There will be crafts, cake stall, egg hunt, tombola and teas. Entrance is 50p. went along to experience life in the shipyards. Volunteers hope to have more visits from other Sunderland schools in the future. The teachers reported the children enjoyed their visit and got a good insight into the workings of a shipyard. A student from Sunderland College is also working with the heritage centre to produce a mural for the reception area. The refurbishm­ent of the Parramatta, a Sheltie boat, is complete. The centre is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 4pm.
