It is very unusual for a father and son to pass two grades at the same time. Dan is a software developer and enjoys running, weightlift­ing and his new hobby karate. His son, Oliver, attends Roseberry Primary School and his hobbies include karate, Lego building and swimming. They train at Pelton Community Centre, which meets on Mondays from 6.30pm to 730pm. The Guild meets three times each month, except August, from 7pm to 9pm in the church hall. The second Wednesday is the business meeting when members are informed of current events before a speaker is introduced. A varied range of topics is covered over the year with tea and biscuits served before the close of the meeting. The third Wednesday is a basic craft class when interested members make a range of simple handcraft items. On the fourth Wednesday, a social studies evening with the emphasis on ‘’social’ is held and these include fun evenings and outings. New members are welcome and you can attend two meetings as non-members. Annual Guild membership is £25. The next meeting in Whitburn Methodist Church hall will be on Wednesday, April 13, at 7pm.

Whitburn Neighbourh­ood Forum has been approved by South Tyneside Council to carry out planning activities in the Whitburn neighbourh­ood area, which broadly conform to the strategic priorities set out in the council’s local plan. For full informa- tion about the implicatio­ns of this approval, support the forum’s inaugural AGM on Saturday, April 8, at 10am in the Barnes Institute. All are welcome to attend.

Memories of Whitburn, a much-loved book about the village by Sybil Reeder containing old photograph­s and stories collected by the author over several years, was thought to be out of print. Two hundred new copies have been found and are available at £5 each. Christine Buckham is coordinati­ng the sale on Sybil’s behalf. Call Christine on 529 3007 if you would like to buy a copy.
