An inquest has opened into the death of a man who was found dead in a Sunderland Travelodge.

The body of Ryan Thomas Wilson, 31, was discovered at the hotel in High Street West, shortly after noon on Sunday.

Sunderland assistant coroner David Place opened and adjourned the inquest at Sunderland Civic Centre yesterday.

At the short hearing, corner’s officer Reginald Hooper confirmed the identity of Mr Wilson, of Cam Mead, Thristley Wood, near Hall Farm, in Sunderland.

The inquest heard a postmortem examination was carried out by Home Office pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton on Monday.

Mr Place said: “The results of that post-mortem examination are still awaited, but an opinion has been offered that requests an opening of an inquest.”

The corner said he would require statements from the police and the person that found the body.

Mr Place also said he had requested copies of Mr Wilson’s medical records, and was still awaiting their receipt.

He added that Mr Wilson’s body was identified by his father, Noel Wilson.

“On that basis I am not in a position to conclude the inquest this morning, he added.

“I therefore formally adjourn the inquest to June 26 at this building.”

Northumbria Police said they were called to the Travelodge, in High Street West, at about 12.15pm on Sunday.

A spokesman for the force said previously there is believed to be no third-party involvement in Mr Wilson’s death.
