Little landmarks to make big display at Shields museum

-

The Groyne, The Word and The Customs House are among the South Shields landmarks that have been scaled down for a new Lego exhibition.

Little Landmarks, featuring 10 models of town destinations, will go on display at South Shields Museum in Ocean Road later this month.

The exhibition will include creations of the newest cultural additions to the South Shields skyline, including the new leisure centre Haven Point.

Geoff Woodward, museum manager, said: “It will be great fun to see iconic South Tyneside architecture brought to life in miniature.

“We’re really looking forward to sharing this with our visitors.

“It’s a very novel way of celebrating the South Tyneside skyline.”

As well as the museum itself, the reconstructed Roman West Gate at Arbeia Roman Fort will be reproduced.

Also on display will be the winning entry in the open competition the museum held for visitors to create a model in Lego of their choice of anywhere in South Tyneside.

There will be a programme of free family events inspired by the Little Landmarks over the duration of the exhibition, which runs from Saturday, June 17 to September 30.

Lego architect Bricks McGee has been commissioned by the museum to create the miniatures.

The buildings that will be miniatur- ised are: South Shields Museum & Art Gallery; Arbeia Roman Fort’s West Gate; The Word; The Customs House; The Old Town Hall; The Town Hall; Souter Lighthouse; St Hilda’s Church, Herd Groyne Lighthouse and Haven Point Leisure Facility.

Entry to the museum is free.
