REDS KO VIRGIL HUNT

LIVERPOOL CALL A HALT TO ‘CONTROVERSIAL’ PURSUIT OF SOUTHAMPTON STAR VAN DIJK

-

Liverpool have abandoned their hopes of signing centre-back Virgil van Dijk and apologised to Southampton for “any misunderstanding” over their interest.

It is understood that Saints had not received any contact from the Reds regarding their defender, yet the Dutchman apparently indicated an eagerness to become the latest player to swap St Mary’s for Anfield.

Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp is believed to have made Van Dijk his top target, with the chance to work with the German reported to have played a significant role in the player’s decision – information that stuck in the craw at Southampton.

Saints are reported to have asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged illegal approach, which has been followed by Liverpool announcing the end of their pursuit.

A statement read: “We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

Manchester City and Chelsea are now expected to battle it out for the former Celtic man.

Derby County boss Gary Rowett has snapped up defender Curtis Davies, 32, from Championship rivals Hull City for an undisclosed fee – his first signing in charge of the Rams.

“I believe, under this manager for a full season, the squad we’ve got is capable of promotion or at least the play-offs,” he said.

Championship club Cardiff City have signed 22-yearold Scotland cap Callum Paterson from Hearts on a three-year deal, after agreeing compensation.

Full-back Paterson, currently out with a knee injury, said: “I’m absolutely delighted and buzzing. Anyone that has watched me has seen that I like to attack. I’m athletic and I like to go forward.”

Ex-Middlesbough midfielder Matt Dolan has joined Newport County from Yeovil Town on a two-year contract. The 24-year-old has previously had a loan stint at hometown club Hartlepool United.

Barrow midfielder Jordan Williams has landed a £100,000 move to League One club Rochdale, on a twoyear deal.

Rangers have signed Vitorio Setubal defender Fabio Cardoso, a third Portuguese signing by boss Pedro Caixinha, following Benfica B loan player Dalcio and veteran Cagliari defender Bruno Alves.

Northern League club Morpeth Town have signed South Shields midfielder Wayne Phillips, who spent two successful seasons with the Mariners, .

Northern League side Bishop Auckland have named ex-Consett chief Colin Myers as assistant manager under Steve Riley.
