joined the mine athletics team taking part in field, track and cross- country events across the country. In 1992, Laurie ran the London Marathon and achieved a ninth world ranking in his age category, at 51. He competed in Road Running Championsh­ips in Birmingham with another two world rankings of ninth and 24th. A grandfathe­r with one son, Jeff, who encouraged him to take part in Parkrun, beginning in the 70 to 74 age category and in the next age category, 75 to 79. He has broken records all over the country and battled health problems to keep on running. He was interviewe­d on BBC TV Look North with a video showing him running. He trains at Newton Aycliffe gym every morning, which is followed by a road run varying from 3km to 8km. Laurie spends a number of months of the year in Sharm-el-Sheikh, in Egypt and is a qualified subaqua diver with more than 12,000 dives, all of which are recorded, signed and verified. 11am. IT is on Mondays from 10am to noon and an art class started on Monday at 1.30pm. Every Tuesday from 5.45pm and Thursdays from 6.15 to 9.30pm it’s the popular dance classes, mainly ballroom. Ace Performers dance classes, for all ages from three years to adult, meets on Thursdays from 3 pm to 6pm, on Fridays from 3pm to 7.15pm and Saturdays from 9.45am to 5pm. Brownies meet from 5pm to 7.30pm on Wednesdays and this is followed at 8pm by the Bingo Club. Year 6 pupils at Hedworth Lane School in Boldon Colliery visited Nissan in Sunderland at the start of the term. It was a superb opportunit­y to see manufactur­ing process at the peak of technologi­cal design and assembly. The pupils engaged in the industrial design process. They toured the plant and sampled what it would be like to be a designer or an engineer. The children were inspired by the whole engineerin­g process and considered what it would be like to have careers in engineerin­g. Megan and Dylan both won prizes for their designs.
