MP hails £150k revamp of pub
A city MP has hailed the new look of a pub following its £150,000 revamp.
Sharon Hodgson visited the Washington Arms on The Green in Washington to see how the old coaching inn was getting on after recently reopening.
The pub was also visited by Sunderland Mayor Doris MacKnight when it reopened last month complete with real ales and restoration of an old chimney as part of the internal and external redecoration.
Since the visit, the pub has organised a Mayor’s charity quiz night on March 14 with cash and raffle prizes.
Ms Hodgson, who has attended the Stonegate-run pub in the past for rotary club meetings, said: “The Washington Arms really is the heart of the community, a hub that local people can visit alone or with friends knowing they will be welcome, and entertained with everything from sport to fundraising.
“It was great to hear about the career pathway that Stonegate offer too.
“We were delighted that Sharon came to meet the team and see the pub, she showed a real understanding for the value of pubs to local people, not just as a watering hole, but as a place that brings people together and supports them,” said manager Wendy Tweddle.
Area manager David Crow who was on hand to give Ms Hodgson the guided tour said: “We appreciate Sharon visiting to see the enhancements and to meet the team.
“This investment forms part of our annual £50million spend developing our pubs across the country providing enhanced community facilities, creating jobs and careers.”
