Sunderland a the nothing-t

-

Sunderland’s last two draws were their most entertaining games this season. I retain a preference for tedious victories. But if you must draw, do it like that.

The return from 3-0 down and the equaliser in the umpteenth minute of added time, both provided much needed fun.

The single points foraged from each of the two fixtures are not only better than nothing; the way they came about gave Sunderland far more to smile about than their opponents.

If you failed to enjoy Callum McManaman scoring a deserved equaliser on Saturday, then you aren’t a Sunderland supporter.

But other than fleeting joy and another desperately needed point; what does it mean? Probably very little. The few occasions this season when Sunderland have shown mettle, are sadly heavily outweighed by the times when they metaphorically (I think) wet themselves because yet more nondescript opposition has gone ahead.

After the flawed heroics in Bristol, we said: “What the draw, or rather the manner of it, means for the future is anyone’s guess. Is it a turning point?

“At the moment: not a clue. Although if they cock it up against Brentford on Saturday we can swiftly conclude that the answer is ‘no’ and nothing has changed.”

After the Brentford defeat, we swiftly concluded that the answer was “no” and nothing had changed.

Since the disastrous appointment of David Moyes, Sunderland have had more “turning points” than a driving instructor. Without actually managing to turn.

So lads, just challenge at Millwall, who have lost only one of their last 11 league games.

Be respectful of this, though not of the menagerie that supports them, while remembering that any team in this division, even the bottom one, is capable of beating any of the other 23 above them.
