ICOS held a litter pick recently in Backhouse Park. A total of 14 people (some pictured) collected nine bags of rubbish. This is the latest community clean-up in the park, a project in St Michael’s ward funded by the East Area of Sunderland Council and supported by local ward councillors. Rotarian Phil Tweddell, of the Rotary Club of Sunderland, acted quickly when he heard that an 18th century bound book of designs for Sunderland’s old North Pier at Roker was being auctioned. Phil was determined that the coloured illustrated designs should remain in the city and convinced the Rotary Club to back him financially at the Boldon auction. Phil’s bid was successful and the beautifully bound collection of drawings were formally handed to members of the Roker Heritage Group at last week’s Rotary meeting in the Rosedene Hotel Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Clubwill meet on Thursday, August 23, at St John’s Church hall, Ashbrooke Road, with coffee from 10am for a 10.30am start.
