STORY: Thousands of children could have an undiagnosed condition affecting their ability to do maths
Marie Millea: There are many pupils who can’t do maths for various reasons. This doesn’t stop the government from putting them through a curriculum they don’t understand and expecting them to sit stressful GCSEs.
Mike Littisore: Is this another ‘invented’ illness for children so that the world ‘goes easy’ on them? It’s not that they don’t ‘understand’ maths, it’s probably that they’re the poorer kids who can’t afford calculators. Where do they use maths? They can now take calculators into exams, if they work in a shop they simply scan goods, etc. If there was a power cut they wouldn’t be able to add up like the older generations.
