Durham High’s ‘outstanding results’

GCSE COMMENT

-

Durham High School for Girls has once again achieved an outstanding set of results.

Over a third of GCSEs were graded 9-8 and nearly two thirds grades 9-7.

At A Level, over a third of entries were awarded A*/A and two thirds awarded grades A*- B.

Star performers were Lara Herriott who achieved five A* grades and is destined for Cambridge University to read natural sciences and Caitlin Whitaker with three A* grades and who is reading fine art at Edinburgh University. Congratulations also go to the girls who achieved three A*/A grades or more: Elinor Fowler who is reading natural sciences at Cambridge University; Olivia Rowe who is reading biochemistry at Newcastle University; Dharshini Sambamoorthi who is reading medicine at the Birmingham and Eve Welch who is reading Spanish and Portuguese at Manchester.

One of the many benefits of a girls’ school is that no subject is deemed to be masculine or feminine.

At DHS, science and mths are great strengths, but of equal popularity are the arts and humanities: 77% of those studying English Literature at A level achieved A*/A.

Head Girl, Hannah King, is going to the University of Bath to read natural sciences and Heather Johnston is reading Dentistry at Leeds University while Lucy Hilton is off to Rose Bruford College to study acting.

Lucy recently starred in Durham High School’s production of Goodnight Mister Tom at Durham’s Gala Theatre.

Other girls are embarking on a diverse range of courses including law, agriculture and nuclear engineering.
