A woman left seriously injured when she was struck by a vehicle in a suspected “hit and run” remains in a critical condition almost one week on.

The 26-year-old, who lives in the Durham area, was left with chest injuries following the incident involving a truck last Friday at 3.30pm on Chester Road, in Millfield.

She was airlifted by the Great North Air Ambulance to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and remains in a critical but stable condition.

One man, aged 44, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been released by Northumbria Police as investigations continue into the collision.

Officers have said one witness had told officers the injured woman may have been a victim of a theft in the moments be- fore the incident. CCTV in the area has been reviewed as part of the police probe, with the vehicle involved among the lines of inquiry being followed by detectives.

A pick-up style van is reported to be linked to the crash on the busy route, which was closed off to traffic while investigators gathered evidence at the scene.

Detective Constable Rob Stormont, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a very serious incident which has left a female pedestrian with severe injuries in hospital.

“She remains in a critical but stable condition, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances around the collision.

“Police believe the collision may have been linked to an alleged theft moments earlier, and officers are keen to receive any fresh information which could shed light on this part of the investigation one week on.

“One man was arrested following the incident and has been assisting us with our inquiries.

“I would now urge any member of the public who witnessed what happened last Friday afternoon, who has not yet spoken to us, to come forward.

“We are also keen to speak to anybody who saw a pick-up style van in the area between 3pm and 3.30pm on that day.”

Anyone with information which could help inquires are urged to call the force on 101 quoting log 673 14/09/18 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
