LUMSDEN SCREAMER SEES OFF THE LEADERS

-

The top-of-the-league derby clash between Penshaw Catholic Club and Washington Sky Lounge was settled by one goal - as Washington pipped the leaders.

The game, as expected, was a tough battle between local rivals.

Penshaw started the game brighter but Washington withstood the early pressure and came back before half-time when the game was still goalless.

Thecontestwassettledafter 10 minutes of the second half when Andy Lumsden hit a 30-yard screamer into the top of the net.

The game continued to be end-to-end with both sides only having a few chances each but no more goals were added.

Penshaw midfielder John Spence was outstanding while Washington’s sweeper John Wilson performed brilliantly in the middle of his defence.

Referee Brian Southern controlled the game well.

After a disapointing start to the season, third-frombottom Grindon Broadway visited third-from-top Hebburn.

Over 80 minutes, Grindon should have won the game but after 15 minutes in the first half - against the run of play - Hebburn took the lead with a free header inside the six-yard box, with the goal from McKenzie.

After 35 minutes, Grindon equalised with a Paul Griffiths penalty.

In the second half, Hebburn seemed to get more into the game and within three minutes Hebburn scored twice to make it 3-1, McKenna getting his second goal which looked borderline offside and Hymans also on target.

No matter how hard Grindon worked, they couldn’t hit the Hebburn net again.

Seaham Marlborough scored for the first time this season in their fixture against North Shields Pineapple - and duly collected their first points with a resounding 5-0 win over the visitors.

Thai Taylor opened the scoring for the hosts after 25 minutes, firing in from a Punshon corner. Holt, making his comeback, doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a thunderbolt into the top corner.

After 50 minutes, Haddon made it 3-0 by firing in with his left, and his second soon followed.

A glorious chance to secure his first ever hat-trick was spurned when he headed wide from five yards.

With five minutes to go, the victory was sealed when Haddon went clean through. His legs gave way, however, and the ball was squared to Choppers to score.

Willow Pond rued missec chances as they went down 2-0 at home to Sedgefield.

Gary Golightly snatched at a shot and fired straight into the arms of Sedgefield keeper Darren Fox, after good work and a cross from David Kelly.

Sedgefield took the lead when Stephen Dalton crossed to the unmarked Wayne Richards. His shot was initially saved by Willow keeper Andy Tilbury only for the ball to be played back in by Dalton for Richards to fire home.

Willow replied when midfielders Gary Barker and Matt Barton combined, but Barton’s shot went just wide.

Sedgefield were countering well but Tilbury saved well, pushing the ball onto the post.

With Tilbury on the floor, Richards collected the ball from the rebound but Willow cleared thanks to man of the match Malcolm Branton.

Willow carved out further chances in the first half, the best a low drive from new boy Stephen Harrison which was cleared off the line.

The second half was a little flat and Willow fell further behind after giving away a needless foul. A cross found Ronald Wishart, who rose above the home defence to head home.

Dalton nearly made it three when he collected the ball from a goal kick but his 30-yard screamer skimmed the bar to safety.

Willow had Golightly on the end of a great cross from Barton but he was caught in two minds whether to head or shot and the chance went begging.
