She studied three different areas popular with tourists to determine how plastic pollution was getting into the lake. The knowledge and skills mean she is now in a very good position to become a professional aquatic scientist. The Universities’ links with organisations such as the Freshwater Biological Association, South Cumbria Rivers Trust, United Utilities and Solway Firth Partnership also helped Emma gain further experience and gain knowledge from different perspectives. Emma will now be moving on to study an MSc in Water and Environmental Management at the University of Brighton. Sit and Get Fit this Wednesday free at Horden Centennial Centre from 10am to 10.30am. This will be followed by the weekly Coffee morning in the centre’s cafe 100. Alice Brown, a former Foundation student at the East Durham College Houghall campus, is now working as a taxi escort and as a volunteer at Stray Aid, looking after adoption dogs and she has developed greatly over her time at the college. She first arrived at the Houghall campus in 2014, and her passion for animals was evident throughout her time at college and she worked with small animal care and farm animals. In her final year, Alice even started driving lessons, passed her test and – with support from the college – progressed into her employment.
