Man dies in blaze tragedy

-

A man has died in a house fire in Sunderland.

Firefighters were called to Mariner Square, in the city’s East End, on Friday, October 19, at 6.20 pm to find the body of a 56-year-old man.

The fire had gone out before crews from Sunderland Central, Marley Park and Farringdon Community Fire Stations arrived on the scene.

Firefighters ventilated the property and isolated the gas supply. It is suspected the fire was caused by smoking materials.

John Pratt, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service area manager for service delivery said: “This is a tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and friends.

“Our crews did everything they could, but the fire was believed to have burnt itself out prior to us being called and the man was confirmed dead when we arrived.

“I would also like to commend our firefighters for their

professionalism and dedication.”

Firefighters are reminding the communities of the importance of having working smoke alarms and the need to test them regularly.

Meanwhile neighbours have spoken of their shock following the incident.

Those living near to the man, named locally as Ian, have said they are saddened and shocked to have learned of his death.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “He has only lived there a few years, I didn’t know him well but I would chat to him while I was hanging the washing out the back. It’s sad.”

Another resident said: “I didn’t know him well but I have seen him in the street on his mobility scooter. It’s a shock.”

One member of staff from Angel’s Place pub, on Church Street East, near to the man’s home, said that he came into the pub regularly each week.

He said: “He would come in on a Tuesday and Wednesday every week. He was a quiet man. It’s a shock.”
