A toddler group meets every Wednesday from 9.30am to 11am, term-time only. Sessions cost £1.50 with under ones free. Children also receive toast and juice. No need to book just go along. For further informatio­n, contact me, Sarah, or pop into the project. A Healing Service takes place on the first Tuesday of the month at 6pm. Go along to St Mary and St Peter’s Church and enjoy a quiet service and receive prayers for healing. Open to all. Humbledon Methodist Church, Ettrick Grove, holds a number of weekly activities including: Mondays, MS Society, 10am to noon and Brownies, 6.30pm; Tuesdays Weight Watchers from 6pm; Wednesday Open Door from 11am to 1pm, when tea or coffee and toast also light lunches will be served; Thursdays Slimming World from 5pm to 7pm.

A brother and sister have been successful in gaining their black belts. Jacky Wang 13, and his sister Jodie, 11. received their black belts on Saturday, October 6. The pair train at Grindon Community Centre, Cortina Avenue, on a Tuesday from 5.30pm to 7pm. Well done from all the students, instructor­s and everyone from the Northern Karate Associatio­n. Anyone who would like to give it a try can have their first lesson free, ring 0780478428­2 for more details. Grindon Drama Workshops have recommence­d for the winter season at GCCP on Sundays at 2pm. The community garden at GCCP has won an award in the Northumbri­a in Bloom It’s Your Neighbourh­ood scheme. Yogapupz runs yoga sessions for babies and toddlers on Wednesday mornings, see www.yogapupz.co.uk for details. On Fridays a Dance Fitness session runs from 6.30pm. This is a family fitness in the dark session with disco lighting for all ages. It’s a chance for mums and dads, and grandparen­ts too, to work out with the bairns (or on their own). Mini Bookaneers is a new story-based adventure and six months to four years at GCCP, which will start on Monday, October 29, at 11am.

Grindon Beavers and Cubs meet at GCCP on Wednesday evenings and welcome enquiries about new members. Call GCCP on 0191 534 2519. Cleadon Village History Society meets tonight in the Old Schoolroom next to All Saints’ parish hall at 7.15pm when Ian Hudson will be talking about The Building of the Tyne Piers. Everyone is welcome to go along. The Men’s Fellowship of All Saints’ Church will meet on Monday in the Committee Room of the parish hall at 7.30pm. Last month they watched a DVD about the beginning of the Korean (or Forgotten) War and it was agreed to continue this with a second DVD this month. New members or visitors are always welcome to go along. Open door is now in full swing on Wednesdays until December from 11am to 1pm, serving tea, coffee and light lunches. All welcome. Two choirs have rehearsal meetings at GCCP, Northern Youth Choir for youngsters on Saturdays from 9.30am to 11.30 am, and Sunderland Jubilate! on Tuesdays for adults from 7.30pm. A self-defence class for ladies runs at GCCP on Saturdays at 3pm. The programme costs £2.50 a week and more details are available from Rob on 07792 104853. Do you enjoy gardening and have few hours to spare? The project is looking for volunteers to help maintain the community garden. Volunteers meet every Monday from 9.30am to noon. The Little Rainbows play group runs on Sundays from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Grindon Church Community Project in Galway Road. All ages are welcome, no charge. Sunday, November 4, is All Souls’ Day which will be marked by a service of remembranc­e in All Saints’ Church at 3.30pm. Compass Acapella, the Cleadon-based close-harmony male voice choir, will be singing in All Saints’ parish hall as a pre-Christmas event on Friday, November 23, at 7.30pm. This very popular group is very entertaini­ng and will include some items from the ladies’ choir also. There will be mince pies and mulled wine after the concert. The Christmas Bazaar will be on Saturday, November 24, at 10am with the grand draw at 1pm. Tickets for this draw will be on sale from members of the congregati­on and there are some excellent prizes. The first production of the 2018/2019 season for Cleadon Village Drama Club will be Dial M for Murder by Frederick Knott. Performanc­es will be at 7.30pm each evening of the week November 12 to November 17. A song, music and dance evening with Beaconband will be hosted in All Saints’ parish hall by Grifaid, which is a charity supplying aquafilter­s to families and communitie­s which have no clean water.
