Wallace McLeod led the way for Sunderland ABC in his fight against B.McLaughlin (Natural Progression), held at the Belle Vue Leisure Centre, Hartlepool.

McLeod, a talented southpaw and national schoolboy champion, looked the part from the start, connecting with some slick and accurate combinations which had the Teessider frustrated throughout.

Although McLaughlin came forward on numerous occasions, it was McLeod who won a unanimous decision and now goes into the final on Thursday, taking on Birtley.

In the 57kg Class B category, Leroy Nelson took on J Sams (Shildon).

Nelson took the contest to Sams, using his left jab to great effect before firing home some strong right hand blows.

The constant barrage of blows really hurt the Shildon boxer hurt, but he fought back.

However, it wasn’t enough as Nelson won a unanimous decision and more than deserved to become North East champion,

Jaxon Laws’ 69kg 18-yearold fight with Owen Rees (Birtley) was an epic bout.

Rees, a strong two fisted relentless fighter, came forward throughout connecting with some heavy artillery.

However, Laws showed some class in using his long reach to his advantage, keeping the Birtley man off balance.

Both boxers went toeto-toe for the whole three rounds, with Rees taking the honours by a unanimous decision to take the 69kg North East title.

Jack Atkinson (75kg Class B)andAndrewLawson(49kg Class B) had no one in their weight class, so both came away with North East titles.

The next round sees Sunderland boxers in action against Yorkshire champions, which will take place at Birtley Boxing Gym on Sunday, November 11.
