MIXED LOCAL RESULTS IN THE EGHAM TROPHY

SHIELDS MAKE PROGRESS AGAIN, BUT HOUGHTON FAIL TO FOLLOW

South Shields made a winning start to their Egham Trophy campaign, but Houghton could not match their opening-round progress.

Having reached the last 16 of the competitio­n last season, Shields got this term underway with a comprehens­ive 103-32 win over Stanley, all four Shields rinks recording wins while the four Stanley squads never reached double figures.

At Shields, Ann Upsall, Pam Carlin, Phil Dixon and Ian Riches beat Brian Houghton 26-9 while Marilyn Robson, Karen Paterson, James Sneller and Gary Farquhar defeated Brett Arkley 26-8 to leave the home leg 5217 up.

And it was a similar tale at Stanley as both Shield’s squads had comfortabl­e wins.

Nina Riches, Jean Chapman, Dave Paterson and David Bolt ran out 24-6 winners and Jackie Tallack, Maureen Charles, Jaxon McKenna and Shaun McIntosh won 27-9 to leave the away squad 51-15 up.

Next up is West Denton on November 11, after they ended Houghton’s interest with a 86-67 win.

At Houghton, Joan Watt, Brenda Robson, Colin Young and Frankie Froud were left to rue back-to-back dropped threes in a 16-15 loss.

Joe Sutherland, Mal Baker, Susan Forster and Joan Rodgerson looked set for victory over Peter Duffy as they led 17-11 after 16 ends, but dropped 15 shots over the remaining five to finish 26-17 down.

At West Denton, Maureen Hall, Peter Thomson (snr), Florence Phythian and Richie Mckie lost 2814 to David Morrison while Michael Wright, Joan Baker, Norma Stephenson and Peter Thomson were 21-16 winners over Michael Bennett to leave the away squad nine shots adrift.

The Denny Cup continues today with Houghton looking to end a run of three consecutiv­e first-round exits as they tackle Great Aycliffe, while South Shields will aim to use last season’s Denny Plate title win as a platform to build on as they face Thornaby.

Other local ties see Stanley against Hartlepool, and Gateshead face Darlington.

South Shields suffered a first-round loss to Great Aycliffe, and drop into the Yetton Plate.

Houghton face Ferryhill in the first round of the over60s double fours on Tuesday (10.30am): at Houghton – J.Sutherland, M.Baker, F.Fletcher, M.Davis; at Ferryhill – G.Brown, P.Thomson, J.Jones, F.Froud.

There is another Atherley Trophy practice match for the Durham County ladies this time against Durham, with Houghton’s Maureen Hall, Joan Baker and Norma Stephenson plus Shields’ Jackie Tallack, A.Jameson, I.Kirkly, Pam Carlin, Jean Chapman, M.Patton and Maureen Charles all selected.

In the men’s and ladies’ internatio­nal trial teams, Shields’ David Bolt is third bowl to Devon’s Jamie Chestney, while Nina Riches is second bowl in Erewash’s Jacqueline Henderson’s rink and Hartlepool’s Lauren Mosley is lead for Adur’s Lorraine Kuhler.

In the local stages of the national competitio­n, Durham’s Gary Smith beat West Denton’s Kevin Blaylock and will face either Alan Lawton (Shields) or clubmate Peter Miles.

Bolt beat West Denton’s Clive Knott, Ken Gill defeated Neil Tallentire while Gateshead’s Mal Johnston overcame Durham’s John Webster, which sets up a tie against Shields’ Shaun McIntosh. Tom Young defeated Mal Peach and will next host Stanley’s Brett Arkley, who beat Gateshead’s Steven Wearmouth.

In the pairs south section, Hartlepool’s Paul Mosley won narrowly at Ferryhill against Alan Hinds, Durham’s Gary Smith beat Shields’ Neal Ridley and James Sneller won at Stanley against Brian Houghton.

Houghton’s Peter Thomson beat Shields’ Bob Cragg and will now head to the Parks to face Mathew Raftree, Gateshead’s Alex Bryden defeated Mal Peach (Shields) and will return to face Dave Paterson, and Houghton’s Frankie Froud lost against West Denton’s Aaron Robson. Froud fared better in the triples, beating Gateshead’s Brian Orrell.

In the over-60s singles, Shields’ Bob Cragg held his nerve to beat Durham’s Laughlin Todd and, in the mixed pairs, Phil Dixon (Shields) lost to West Denton’s Aaron Robson. In the mixed fours, Robson beat Dave Pater son and in the ladies singles, Nina Rich es won an all-Shields affair with Katie Donkin.

The Grindon League AGM is at Grangetown Community Centre, Stanningto­n Grove on Thursday (6.45pm).
