Boys grab victory from the jaws of defeat
Sunderland Primary Schoolboys sealed a dramatic 5-4 league win over Redcar and Cleveland at Nissan. Missing Ryly Deehan and Aidan Meagan, the boys started the game in excellent fashion and had Redcar on the back foot from the off. Sunderland took the lead when a corner from Evan Clark found Bailey Corner in the six-yard box. The keeper saved his initial effort but he reacted first to fire home the rebound. The same combination was responsible for the second goal when another Clark corner found Corner in the six-yard box and he volleyed home first time past the keeper. Corner completed his hat trick five minutes before half time when he forced a defender into a mistake out on the wing, cut inside before unleashing a shot which took a deflection off a defender before slipping through the keeper’s hands. The only disappointing aspect of the performance was that several other good chances had been missed. Redcar started the second half much the brighter and started to get a foothold in the game. Just as it looked that the storm had been weathered, a poor clearance by keeper Finley Robertson found a Redcar player who fired the ball back over his head from 25 yards. This sparked a nightmare 10 minutes for the home side in which they conceded a further three goals to fall behind 4-3 down. To their credit, Sunderland bounced back immediately when a through ball released Matthew Taylor and he beat the advancing keeper to level it up. Sunderland found the winning goal when Jude Cogdon beat his man down the left and fired in a dangerous cross which was headed past the Redcar keeper by one of his defenders.
