Good news for fans - we get to visit Accrington again!

-

It isn’t often a referee has my sympathy, but on Saturday the officials were in a bit of a no-win situation. Call off the game, you leave thousands of travelling fans with a wasted journey, not to mention one of the biggest games in the history of Accrington Stanley ruined.

Whether that played on the mind of Mr Langford yesterday I don’t know, but I think he managed the situation well in the circumstances.

Obviously safety comes first but with the weather subsiding, starting the game was the correct decision. I’ve seen a few comments asking why another 20 minutes were not possible, well as someone stood in the roofless away end, there was no chance on earth the game could continue. It had descended into a farce.

Never have I been so wet in my life!

The sideways rain made it impossible to see the pitch properly, as Chris Maguire scored a Chris Maguire goal that, tragically, will be wiped from the records.

Accrington’s goal was down to the conditions really, plus some bizarre Sunderland defending, and shortly afterwards what had become a game of water polo, had to be abandoned.

A shame, but if we’re honest, it’s another chance to beat an Accrington team that should the game be played on a pitch rather than a lake - Sunderland should have no trouble doing.

The Wham Stadium was an incredible throwback to, well I’m not really sure what, but definitely a throwback!

The portable toilet blocks, the burger vans, the plastic table of condiments, a digger to the side of the away end and the ‘bar facilities’? Yes please - this is the League One I have grown to love.

An enjoyable shambles. No doubt this enjoyment is down to a group of players fast becoming my favourite ever, but I am loving this adventure.

Give me a freezing cold December trip to Lancashire over another expensive day out at an average Premier League team, praying we’re still in the game at half time.

For the record, I don’t want to be in this league forever, but the more nonsense you see in the top flight, this season is becoming more and more a breath of fresh air.

The negative aspect to the abandonment is Sunderland now being a further game, and seven points, behind leaders Portsmouth.

In fact, Pompey play Charlton tomorrow meaning a potential 10 point gap, and with an already hectic schedule, this is now another game to fit in somewhere, as well as possibly the game to be played on FA Cup Third Round weekend.

We will know about that tomorrow night when we face Walsall in the Second Round Replay.

Perhaps there will be another run-out for Ruiter, Bainbridge, Mumba, Sinclair et al, as a tie at Bolton awaits the winner.

That’s not the moneyspinner we’d hoped for maybe, but a good chance to gauge where we are against, albeit struggling, Championship opposition.

Jack Ross will no doubt want to win the game, and keep the unbeaten run going even if it means adding more games to the calendar, and I expect to see us travelling to Bolton come January 5.
